Motivated by the Fear of Being Average: Step Into Your Full Potential

Most people don’t like to be thought of as mediocre. We recoil from the word as if it’s an insult — a suggestion that we’ve failed to rise to some invisible standard. Yet, strangely, most people live their lives entirely unafraid of being average. Many even embrace it.

And here’s the irony: the definition of mediocrity is being average.

In Western culture, we’ve reached a point where “ordinary” isn’t just accepted — it’s celebrated. We applaud our average-ness almost as loudly as we applaud the exceptional among us.

It raises a real question: Why?


Average Isn’t What We Think It Is

I am absolutely in favour of authenticity, of honouring our individuality, and of stripping away the masks that stop us from connecting with who we truly are. I believe in compassion, acceptance, and meeting each other as human beings first.

But there’s a difference between embracing our authentic selves and pridefully settling into a life that doesn’t reflect our potential.

Because the truth is, when you really look at what “average” has become, it’s not anything worth aspiring to.

Average is 43% of adults experiencing a mental disorder in their lifetime, while mental health services remain under-resourced and undervalued.

Average is getting less than the recommended 7–9 hours of sleep and calling it normal — plastering over exhaustion with caffeine and willpower.

Average is falling short of the basic exercise guidelines, then blaming age, stress, or a “busy life,” even though the consequences stretch far beyond physical health.

Average is being overweight or obese — not because people lack worth or beauty at any size, but because society has normalised lifestyles that disconnect us from our bodies and wellbeing.

Average is spending seven hours a day or more on screens while complaining we have “no time” for what we genuinely want.

So when people proudly label themselves as “average,” I can’t help but ask:

Is this really the badge you want to wear? Is this the life you’re choosing?

Because 2026 is around the corner.

And you have a choice.

Will you walk into it like everyone else — making a vague New Year’s resolution fuelled by temporary motivation, only to slide straight back into old patterns by mid-January?

Will you hold onto the comfort of mediocrity, telling yourself it’s “just how life is,” even though a deeper part of you knows you’re capable of more?

Or will you step into a year of growth and authenticity — a year where you finally stop treating your potential as optional?


Leaving Average Behind

Stepping outside the bubble of average isn’t glamorous.

It’s not the neatly filtered version you see on social media.

It is uncomfortable.

It is unfamiliar.

It can be deeply lonely.

Growth often demands that you stand apart from the crowd long before you ever feel ready.

But every single time I’ve chosen to take that step — even when I felt terrified or unprepared — it has been worth it.

This past year, I made it my mission to run from the life I had previously accepted as “normal.” Not because I look down on anyone who chooses to live differently, but because I knew that place wasn’t where I was meant to stay. Choosing deeper authenticity changed everything.

My days are no longer shaped around distraction or numbing out. They’re built around progress — honest, imperfect, consistent progress. Evenings spent binge-watching to avoid my own dissatisfaction are gone. I still rest, but it’s intentional now — not a reflex to escape.

I’ve also stopped contorting myself to fit the expectations of people who didn’t truly see me. That was a big one. People-pleasing felt safe; it kept the peace. But it also kept me small.

This year, I let go of relationships and environments that required me to shrink to belong. My social circle is smaller — but aligned. Genuine. Supportive. Creating space has allowed new, vibrant, deeply fulfilling relationships to enter my life. Relationships where I am wholly myself. No masks. No shrinking. No compromise of who I am.

I’m also taking ownership of my physical health more deeply than ever. I’ve reached my pre-pregnancy weight — a milestone I’m proud of — but the journey isn’t finished. Growth doesn’t stop at one goal; it evolves. I’m learning to honour the path instead of clinging to the finish line.

Across all of this, I’ve stumbled. I’ve resisted. I’ve had days where growth felt heavy and overwhelm whispered that retreat would be easier. But I don’t let those moments dictate my direction anymore.

Because discomfort is not a sign to turn back —

it’s a sign that I’m moving.

And if there’s one thing I know now more than ever, it’s this:

If you want a life that isn’t average, you have to stop behaving like everyone else.


The Fear of Being Average Is Not a Bad Thing

People often say fear is weakness. I disagree.

Sometimes fear is a compass.

When the fear of being average rises in your chest, what if it isn’t insecurity — but recognition?

What if it’s the part of you that knows you’re meant for more trying to wake you up?

Fear can be destructive when it holds you back.

But fear can be powerful when it pulls you forward.

If you’re afraid of wasting your potential…

of playing small…

of settling for a life that never challenges or transforms you…

Good.

Let that fear move you.

Let it push you.

Let it shape your decisions into ones your future self will thank you for.

2026 will arrive whether you’re ready or not.

The question is: Who will you be when it gets here?

Someone who hid behind the comfort of average?

Or someone who decided that growth, authenticity, and intention were worth the discomfort?
